Cupping therapy is a technique used in body work where glass cups are used to create suction on the skin. When integrated into treatment provided at MetaMed the aim is to reduce muscle tension, fascial strains and improve healing.
The benefits of cupping therapy.
- improve blood flow
- relieve congestion
- reduce inflammation
- improve healing time
Different styles of cupping therapy.
Traditionally a flame is used to create a vacuum suction. At MetaMed we use a handheld pump to allow more control over the level of suction created. There are several ways in which the cups can be used, the most common being:
- static cupping
- slide or dynamic cupping
Static cupping.
With static cupping a medium to strong suction is applied and the cup is kept in place. This creates a strong pull sensation as it lifts the skin, fascia and muscle. As the tissues start to relax a sensation of warmth is common as the blood flow increases and tension eases. Static cupping is excellent for heavily congested tissue, stress / anxiety or if you feel your back and chest is tight after an upper respiratory infection and chronic cough.
Slide or dynamic cupping.
Slide or dynamic cupping is used with oil and a gentle-medium suction to lift the skin and fascia, the cups are then moved around in a flowing motion. This technique is great for myofascial release and to stimulate blood flow.
What does the bruise-like marking mean?
Depending on the health of the tissues treated varied amounts of ‘bruise' like discolouration may appear. Often with more congested areas appearing darker (more common with static cupping). Healthier tissues will heal quicker with some within hours of your treatment. As your condition improves you will notice less ‘bruising' with cupping therapy.
Your therapist will discuss this with you dependent on your reaction. Any marks will resolve within 10 (maximum 14) days.
